Burnley attempt to ward off Tottenham with new deal for key player
Burnley are determined to keep hold of Nick Pope and will soon offer the Tottenham target a new contract, according to a report.
Pope has been a vital part of the Clarets’ extended stay in the Premier League since 2016. He has kept an impressive 45 clean sheets in 124 appearances.
The 29-year-old’s best campaign to date came in 2017-18, when he conceded just 35 goals in as many league matches. His great form helped Burnley to achieve their highest top flight finish in 51 years.
Tottenham are rumoured to be interested in Pope as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris. The club captain is now 34 and likely entering the twilight years of his career.
Spurs signed Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta in the summer but could turn to Pope as they look to bolster the squad.
Football Insider write that Burnley are preparing to offer Pope a contract extension in response to the transfer links.
They want to extend his current deal which expires in June 2023. Talks are expected to open soon between the club and Pope’s representatives.
Burnley have made it a priority to tie down their key players. The future of manager Sean Dyche is finalised after he penned a new four-year deal in September.
The report claims that Ben Mee and Ashley Barnes will be next in line for contract discussions. They are both out of contract in 2023 as things stand.
James Tarkowski is added to that list, although his situation is more complicated. The 28-year-old was the subject of a £30million West Ham bid last year. Leicester City are also known admirers.
Burnley sit in 18th place after seven Premier League matches. They have drawn against Leeds, Leicester and Norwich but are yet to pick up a victory.
They take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City once the international break has concluded.

Former Tottenham man gets UCL move
Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier has found a new club following his Tottenham exit.
The right-back left Spurs on deadline day after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
He was linked with a shock move to rivals Arsenal. But Aurier has instead decided to play under Unai Emery at Villarreal.
The La Liga outfit are playing in the Champions League this term thanks to their Europa League triumph in 2020-21.
They were recently beaten 2-1 by Manchester United in Group F as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late winner.
