Burnley in perilous position as Palace star seems to rebuff transfer interest

Burnley’s hopes of signing Christian Benteke as an answer to their forward problems appear to be over amid claims the Belgian wants to stay put at Crystal Palace.

The Clarets have been in a dangerous position for the entire season. Indeed, they have won just one Premier League game this season, a 3-1 victory against Brentford in October.

They are currently dead bottom of the Premier League, but do have multiple games in hand on the teams around them.

The sale of striker Chris Wood to fellow strugglers Newcastle has plunged the Clarets into further danger.

Wood was Burnley’s top goalscorer this season, and had scored the most league goals for the club in three of the four seasons prior. Losing such a crucial player in their current position clearly causes problems.

Sean Dyche’s side have been looking to bring in a striker to fill the void left by Wood, and help fire the Clarets to safety. Burnley had their sights set on Benteke, though a report from the Evening Standard claims the forward has ‘no intention’ of leaving Palace.

Palace are nine places better off than Burnley, in 11th, and are on an upwards trajectory under Patrick Vieira.

As such, Benteke’s reluctance to move on from the Eagles makes sense, especially when the alternative is bottom of the league.

What’s more, the report seems to suggest the Belgian forward’s intentions are pretty concrete.

In that case, the Clarets will be forced to look elsewhere for a saviour to their season.

Benteke unlikely but Burnley hopeful of striker signing

While it seems Benteke will not be heading to Turf Moor, the Clarets are still hopeful of replacing Wood. The forward they are interested in is Kieffer Moore from Cardiff.

Cardiff are struggling near the bottom of the Championship, and Moore might want to jump ship upon receiving an offer from a current Premier League side.

Whether Moore is the man to fire Burnley to safety is another question.

While the Welsh international scored 20 goals in the Championship last season, he has netted just five this term.

Furthermore, it may be a waste for Burnley to take Moore to the top flight and expect him to be prolific.
