Chelsea told to ditch ‘erratic’ star; replace him with ‘big-game’ player

Chelsea have been told that it’s time to move on from Timo Werner after just one season and sign a big-game striker instead.

The Germany international was tipped to make a big impact at Stamford Bridge after his £47.6million arrival from RB Leipzig, where he scored 34 goals last season. However, Werner has notched a disappointing 12 times in 49 games in all competitions for the Blues this term.

The pacy attacker was handed a start in Saturday’s FA Cup final loss to Leicester. However, he failed to take any of his chances and was taken off late on – despite the Blues needing an equaliser.

And former Aston Villa forward Gabby Agbonlahor believes Thomas Tuchel needs someone who can turn up in the big games.

“I’ve tried to give him the benefit of the doubt as it’s his first season. But the more I’m seeing of him he’s making the wrong decision,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“He picked the ball up, running at two defenders and takes a wild shot over the bar. It was best to make a pass and another run.

“He seems a bit too erratic and Chelsea, with their history with the likes of Didier Drogba and the strikers they’ve had in the past, they need to go out and buy a big, big striker who can score goals and turn up in the big games.”

Former Blues frontman Tony Cascarino also claims that Werner’s decision-making has been very poor.

He added: “He makes a lot of bad decisions for a striker. I’ve been there and know what I’m talking about on this. I did it for a period in my career.

“My decisions were always wrong for about 18 months and couldn’t fathom how I would choose the wrong option.

“He’s doing that at the moment too regularly. For someone who can devastate with his pace, he gets in position and thinks ‘what am I going to need to do?’ Ultimately, he chooses the wrong option.”e

Werner needs some help

Another former Blues star, Mark Bosnich, had a slightly different take on Werner when he spoke to told talkSPORT.

Commentating on the Wembley clash, he added: “The bottom line is they did create chances, there’s no doubt about that. If it wasn’t for Kasper Schmeichel, they would have won that game.

“Going down 1-0 to a team like Leicester, who are so tactically astute and know really how to protect their goal, is a difficult thing.

“I can understand how their supporters and you are coming from [regarding Werner]. I remember when he first signed for Chelsea and remember someone saying at Leipzig he had somebody big up front with him who was more of a buffer and decoy for him, which allowed him more time and space to score.

“He hasn’t had that at Chelsea consistently.”
