Classy Manchester United midfield target ‘is not a Ralf Rangnick player’, insists pundit

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves “would not fit” into Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United squad, according to one pundit.

Former England keeper Paul Robinson has no doubts the midfielder is ready for a big move. However, the 42-year-old is not sure a move to Old Trafford is the right fit for the classy playmaker. Rangnick will get the chance to take a look at Neves in the flesh on Monday night when Wolves travel to take on United.

Neves has been starring for Wolves ever since his £15.8m transfer from Porto in July 2017. The following season, such was his impact at Molineux, club chiefs tied him down to a long-term contract until 2024.

A whole host of big names have been linked with the 24-year-old, including United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Rangnick is understood to be looking to add some depth to his midfield.

Last month after the win over Crystal Palace he spoke about midfield pair Scott McTominay and Fred: “They did one or two or three mistakes, especially in the first half there were two square passes; one from Scott, one from Fred.

“I don’t like those kinds of balls in midfield in those positions. But overall, when the other team is in possession of the ball, both Fred and Scotty they are almost perfect for that kind of football.”

That led ESPN to suggest that they had been told that Rangnick saw United’s much-maligned midfield as their greatest weakness and he was looking to address that. Robinson though doubts whether Neves’ style would be the right fit for Rangnick’s United.

Robinson told Football Insider: “Neves is a top player.

“I like his creativity and I like what he can do on the ball. Defensively, I am not so sure that he is a [Ralf] Rangnick player though.

“When I look at their squad, I cannot see where he’d fit in.

“I think he is ready to play at a big club and at that level because he’s a top player. He needs to be playing Champions League football.

Lage ready to push Neves

“However, in regards to Man United I cannot see where he fits in or where he’d play. They have a lot of players who are in a similar mould do Neves.”

Wolves boss Bruno Lage is well aware of the interest in the Portuguese star. And he is desperate to help Wolves take the next step in the Premier League.

He said: “Ruben feels this is his second home – and happiness comes with that.

“That’s good, but it’s another thing to convince him to stay. It’s not about a contract or money. It’s about creating a big team that fights for different things.

“Ruben is in that place where he needs a different challenge. And we also want a different challenge for the club.

“We want to push younger guys, like Ruben, to the next level.”
