Edinson Cavani looks likely to be the subject of an ambitious new approach to poach him away from Manchester United – and his exit could be made official as soon as January 1.

Cavani has been with United since the summer of 2020, when they snapped him up following his release by PSG. In his debut season in English football, the striker scored 17 goals in 39 games. That underlined that, despite his advancing years, the striker still knows his way to goal.

However, with his deal only being for an initial year, several suitors began circling for the Uruguayan star. And with Boca Juniors seemingly closing on a deal, Cavani performed a U-turn, having been convinced by Cavani to stay for another year.

But just a few months later, Cavani once again finds his name in the headlines again. Indeed, reports on Wednesday claimed Boca vice-president Juan Roman Riquelme has re-opened talks to sign the striker in January.

“He called me in January to see if he was able to come,” Riquelme continued. “That’s when I realised that he wants to play for our club.

“Hopefully at some point we’ll be lucky enough to see him celebrate a goal at La Bombonera, which is what he dreams of happening.”

However, it seems Boca have some serious competition for the striker in the form of Palmeiras.

According to outlet Mercado da Bola, the Brazilian side have a ‘strategy’ to sign Cavani when his deal with the Red Devils expires.

Under the leadership of Leila Pereira, they are planning a statement signing to kick off their new era. And with the finances to make it happen, they are reportedly seeking to make Cavani their record earner. 

Indeed, Pereira is willing to pump vast sums into the club and is undeterred by the high salary Cavani will command.

They also could offer Cavani the Palmeriras armband in a clever strategy they hope will secure his signature and beat off the likes of Barcelona.

And with Cavani having previously expressed a desire to end his career in his native South America, there’s a growing hope his signing will be secured.

They are now reportedly planning to make a formal approach to Cavani’s agent and will be allowed to hold formal talks with him from January 1.

United urged to make most of Cavani

There have been some rumours of Cavani leaving Man Utd in January.

But his recent return to prominence may be giving them second thoughts and one pundit wants them to utilise him to the maximum.

“If you play Cavani, you will see results,” Frank McAvennie told Football Insider recently.

“Cavani is a great striker, I have been saying this for weeks. He needs to be starting.

“It’s one of the reasons I have been questioning Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer]. It’s so obvious to me.

“The whole thing is shocking, Cavani should be in there every game.

“He scored bags of goals last season and he has just been sat on the bench for most of this season.

“Just play your best players. I don’t get why Man United are relying on players who are unproven.

“Some of the lads who have been playing are very talented but they lack the experience of Cavani.

“He scores goals, it’s what he does. Start him and you will see results.”
