Dele Alli said he is enjoying being back in the first team with Tottenham but admitted this season has not been good enough.
Alli found himself frozen out under Jose Mourinho earlier this season. Since the head coach was sacked, he has found more gametime under interim boss Ryan Mason. He is still yet to complete a full game this season but managed a joint-best of 82 minutes against Wolves on Sunday.
The attacking midfielder was hailed by Mason for his performance as he looks to finish the season with a flourish.
And Alli admitted he has felt much better thanks to his increased role in the team.
“I’m enjoying it,” he told Sky Sports. “With players like this it is a joy to play.
“I’m just trying to express myself and have fun. Mentally I just want to go out there and help as much as we can.
“We know that if we are to win these games we have to work together, so I’m just trying to find rhythm and play as much as I can.”
Tottenham earned a 2-0 win over Wolves to keep their European ambitions alive. Alli was among their standout players but he was impressed with the team’s performance as a whole.
“It was good,” he said. “We dominated from the start, played well.
“They gave us a few problems but we managed it well throughout the game and after going 1-0 up it was important to get the second goal.
“I was disappointed not to finish the chance but we come away with three points and move on to the next game.
“It was tough, we had a gameplan and stuck to it. We believed in ourselves even when things weren’t working as well we stuck to it and eventually it paid off.”
Alli not happy with position
Tottenham are sixth in the table as they look to make up ground they lost in recent months. Considered outside challengers for the title earlier in the season, they have fallen well off the pace but are looking to hold their heads up high by the end of the season.
Despite their recent resurgence, Alli admitted they are still disappointed with their position in the table. As such, he urged his teammates to finish the season strongly.
“It’s important, we are not happy with where we are, we should be higher and we only have ourselves to blame,” he said.
“We are showing now what we can do but it is a bit too late. We just have to keep working hard and take it into the next season as well.”
