‘Disrespectful’ Amartey action gives Chelsea fresh motivation for revenge

Leicester City will hope Daniel Amartey’s post-match actions do not come back to haunt them as the defender was seen throwing away the Chelsea pennant after Saturday’s FA Cup final.

The Foxes lifted the trophy for the first time in their history with a deserved 1-0 victory over the Blues at Wembley. Youri Tielemans’ superb long-range strike in the second half was enough for Brendan Rodgers’ side to claim the spoils. The match saw the return of fans to the stadium and they celebrated long after the final whistle.

Understandably, the Leicester players were ecstatic and, after the presentation, celebrations continued in the dressing room. Amartey was seen to pick up the pennant Blues skipper Cesar Azpilicueta had exchanged with Foxes captain Kasper Schmeichel.

He then tossed it over his shoulder to the amusement of watching team-mates. There has been plenty of reaction on social media, with Stamford Bridge fans deeming it disrespectful towards their club.

And the west Londoners will have an almost immediate chance for revenge as the sides meet again on Tuesday. The game is vital to both clubs’ chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Third-placed Leicester are two points clear of Thomas Tuchel’s side and six better off than Liverpool in fifth. But the Reds have a game in hand on the duo and face West Brom on Sunday.

It is all to play for and the capital club should need no extra motivation after witnessing Amartey’s actions.

Rodgers hails Leicester fight

The game turned on Tielemans’ 66th-minute goal but Leicester also had Schmeichel to thank for two world-class stops. The talented shot-stopper turned Ben Chilwell’s header on to a post before getting a hand to Mason Mount’s powerful shot.

Rodgers acknowledged the key moments and felt his side deserved to lift the trophy.

“Youri Tielemans’ goal was like an old-school FA Cup-winning goal, but also Kasper Schmeichel’s saves – those are the special moments you need in games,” he said. “Overall we were the better team, super aggressive, pressed well. We were always a threat with the ball.

“Chelsea are an amazing team, that’s why they’re in a Champions League final, but I thought we deserved it.”

Following Tuesday’s renewal of hostilities with Chelsea, Leicester face Tottenham on the final day of the season. Rodgers will hope that his men can do the business once again to avoid a nervy final day next Sunday.
