Doubt cast on Eriksen desire for Tottenham reunion as seven clubs threaten Brentford
Tottenham Hotspur are one of seven clubs who pose a threat to Brentford in their hopes to keep Christian Eriksen next season, an update has revealed.
Eriksen returned to the Premier League to play for Brentford earlier this year. He is on a contract until the end of the season. Having shown he still has what it takes more than half a year after his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, he is now building interest.
Thomas Frank has made no secret of his wish for Brentford to keep Eriksen next season. However, he believes discussions are only likely to take place at the end of the current campaign.
By then, though, there could be several other clubs trying to take the attacking midfielder. According to 90min, there are seven other English clubs competing for Eriksen’s future.
One of them is Tottenham Hotspur, for whom Eriksen played between 2013 and 2020. But the report casts doubt on whether he would want to return after how he departed.
Spurs could not meet his demands for a contract extension, which led him to join Inter Milan (who later had to release him due to Italian regulations on athletes performing with heart-starting devices). Now, Eriksen is not seeking such a high figure – it may be less than six figures per week – but still wants his next contract to reflect his significance.
Whether Brentford can afford that themselves remains to be seen. But they are said to have some optimism about him extending his stay.
If not, Tottenham are not the only potential takers. Also in contention for his signature, the report reveals, are Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, Newcastle and West Ham.
Premier League football is all but mathematically assured for Villa, Palace and West Ham. In addition, Newcastle now have a better chance of staying up. Everton are still in some danger, while Fulham look likely to win promotion back from the Championship.
Eriksen wants Premier League stay
If Eriksen wants to return to European level, his best options in the immediate future would be Tottenham or West Ham. But there will be a lot of factors for him to take in.
West Ham manager David Moyes recently revealed they were offered the chance to sign Eriksen, but had doubts over his health. Now, his form on the pitch is proving he can still have a future in football.
Eriksen has one goal and one assist from five Premier League appearances for Brentford so far. The Bees have won all four of the matches he has started – including against Chelsea and West Ham this month.
The former Ajax ace has also been back on the international scene with Denmark. During the March international break, he scored against the Netherlands and Serbia.
Foreign clubs are also said to be circling for his signature. However, his preference is to continue in the Premier League. Exactly where remains to be seen.
