Europa Conference League draw: Tottenham face tricky French side, club with Chelsea link and European debutants
Tottenham Hotspur will face Rennes, Vitesse Arnhem and NS Mura after the Europa Conference League draw was made for the group stage.
A new competition for the 2021-22 season, the Conference League is UEFA’s tertiary tournament. All the teams involved had to enter either by winning a play-off, or dropping down from a competition above. No teams qualified directly for the group stage, but now the 32 participants are known.
Tottenham made it to the group phase after overturning a first-leg deficit to see off Pacos De Ferreira. After reaching the Round of 16 in the Europa League last season, this is a competition they could go far in if they give it some attention.
Their approach remains to be seen, but what is clear is who they will be playing in the group stage.
Tottenham have been placed in Group G, along with Rennes, Vitesse Arnhem and NS Mura.
Rennes qualified for the tournament after beating Rosenborg in a play-off. They came sixth in Ligue 1 last season and their star player is Eduardo Camavinga. The French outfit were in the Champions League last season, coming fourth in Chelsea’s group.
Vitesse Arnhem, who have had several players on loan from Chelsea over the years, beat Anderlecht in the play-off round. They came fourth in last season’s Eredivisie.
NS Mura, the Slovenian champions, are playing in a European group stage for the first time.
The group stage gets underway on September 16th, while the final will take place in Tirana, Albania on May 25th, 2022.
