Europa Conference League draw: Tottenham paired with Portuguese or Northern Irish opponent
Tottenham Hotspur will face either Pacos de Ferreira or Northern Irish side Larne in the play-off round for the Europa Conference League.
A new competition for the 2021-22 season, the Europa Conference League is UEFA’s tertiary competition. No teams qualify directly for the group stage, instead having to navigate a play-off tie or falling from the Europa League. Spurs are in the play-off round after finishing seventh in the 2020-21 Premier League.
England’s sole representative in the competition, it remains to be seen what emphasis they will put on it. They may prefer to focus on their domestic duties, but as one of the strongest teams in the competition, they may see it as a way back to winning trophies.
Before they can think about that, they must get past either Pacos de Ferreira of Portugal or Larne of Northern Ireland.
The third qualifying round ties between Pacos and Larne take place on August 5th and 12th, after which Spurs will know for sure who they will be playing.
There will be little time to prepare, though. The first leg of the play-off will take place on August 19th before the second leg seven days later.
