EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham could still get their man, as big summer U-turn ‘not inconceivable’

Former Leicester midfielder Robbie Savage believes Brendan Rodgers could be tempted to move to Tottenham this summer – even if he guides the Foxes to glory against Chelsea in next weekend’s FA Cup final.

Rodgers has insisted he will not fill the void left by the sacking of Jose Mourinho at Spurs. The former Celtic boss said last month: “I’m very, very happy here. I have a huge respect here for the players, the board and I really feel that I want to continue my work here.

“I’ve got a set of players that give me their heart and soul every single day and also I can see a future here in terms of the development of the squad. I’ve got a really strong relationship with the board. We work very closely together.

“Now for the next period of years let’s see if we can roll that out now, can we continually evolve. Tottenham is a great club, one of the biggest clubs in Britain but for me I’m just in a really, really happy place in my life.”

Savage though suspects that Rodgers’ loyalty could evaporate if he is offered the top job with the north London club. Savage believes the next three weeks may decide the fate of Rodgers, with Leicester aiming to win the FA Cup for the first time in their history as they prepare for their first final in the competition for 52 years.

They are also pushing for a top-four finish in the Premier League. However last Friday’s shock 4-2 home defeat against Newcastle has put the second those ambitions in peril. And Savage believes Rodgers may be tempted to seek pastures new if a big job is put before him this summer.

Speaking exclusively to TEAMtalk at a BT Sport event, the Welshman who was a key man in Martin O’Neill’s successful Leicester side at the turn of the century suggested the Irishman leading the Foxes charge may feel he has taken the club as far as he can.

“I’ve had the argument with a few people who have asked me why you would leave Leicester City to manage Spurs, but I can see why Brendan would do that,” said Savage.

“If Leicester don’t qualify for the Champions League and win the FA Cup, Brendan might think it’s the right time to move on. Could he do any better than that next season? I’m not so sure.

“Liverpool will improve, Manchester United and Manchester City will strengthen again, you would expect to see Chelsea sign big players this summer and Leicester can’t compete with them financially.

‘Rodgers a future England manager’

“Tottenham have to get better next season and the same goes for Arsenal, but this might be as good as it gets for Leicester.

“I know they won the title in 2016, but that was a one-off freak story that will never happen again, so it’s not inconceivable that Brendan would look at the Tottenham job and think it could be the next step for him.

“I’m sure he will stay at Leicester if they are in the Champions League, but what big job will come up in the next year that Rodgers might get?

“He won’t get Liverpool again, the Manchester clubs are out, Thomas Tuchel is doing well at Chelsea, so you are looking at Spurs and Arsenal.

“I also think he could be a future England manager and in my eyes, he could also go abroad and manage a top team.

“Brendan Rodgers is good enough to manage any club in world football. He is that good.”
