Former star reveals worry over West Brom style that could hinder promotion

Kevin Phillips has pointed out that West Brom will do well to maintain their direct football throughout the campaign.

This comes after Baggies boss Valerian Ismael stated that his players need a rest during the international break, to which Phillips agreed with.

West Brom succumbed to their first league defeat before the interval, losing 1-0 away at Stoke City. Speaking to the Express & Star Ismael admitted his side needed to “re-charge” their batteries before the Championship returns.

Despite starting the season brightly, they were well beaten against the Potters, with the former forward questioning their style of play.

Speaking to West Brom News, Phillips said: “Yeah, [it’s understandable] with the style of football.

“I was at the game at Stoke and they were pretty poor on the night, to be honest. Stoke played well so the better team on the evening won.

“With the style of play, they need to rest when they can.

“I think people have asked, ‘can they keep that style up all season with the size of the squad?’. It’s very difficult to do that.”

The Baggies return to action on Friday night where they face West Midlands rivals Birmingham City.

Currently sitting second in the league, Ismael’s men will be looking to bounce straight back from the loss at the Bet 365 Stadium and grab a much-needed victory.

Robinho, Eto’o or Johnson? Which example will Newcastle follow with their newly acquired wealth?

Prem pair battle for Sam Johnstone

West Ham have joined Tottenham in a bid to land West Brom shot-stopper Sam Johnstone.

The goalkeeper is out of contract at the Hawthorns at the end of the season, leading to West Ham and Tottenham apparently penciling in offers, according to The Sun.

Johnstone is a hot property at the moment, claiming international recognition despite playing in the Championship.

His assist to Jack Grealish in Saturday’s England game showed his ability to stay switched on despite having little to do.

It is clear Johnstone is a very capable keeper, and his performances warrant a move back to the Premier League.

With his contract ending in June 2022, a number of sides have registered interest. West Ham and Spurs seem the most attractive destinations for Johnstone.
