Fresh report claims Newcastle want playmaker, if Joe Willock bid fails

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley this summer, if their bid to land Joe Willock fails.

Steve Bruce has prioritised a move for the Arsenal man again after he made a big impression on loan at St James’ Park last season. His ability to score goals from midfield gave the Magpies a different dimension during the second half of the campaign as they pulled away from the relegation dogfight.

However, Bruce also has his eye on other targets, with The Athletic claiming that Barkley is one of them.

The 27-year-old joined Chelsea from Everton in 2018. However, he has struggled for regular game time at Stamford Bridge, scoring 11 times in 86 games for the Blues.

Last season was spent on loan at Aston Villa, where – after a bright start – he once again struggled to get on the pitch.

Thomas Tuchel is said to have made it clear that Barkley is not part of plans going forward and can be sold.

West Ham, Everton also keen

West Ham boss David Moyes has already signaled his interest, while a return to Goodison Park has also been mooted.

The England international, who has won 33 caps for his country, has two years left to run on his Chelsea contract.

In terms of Newcastle’s interest, they are looking at another loan deal – if they fail to bring Willock back.

But Bruce is also monitoring the likes of Conor Gallagher, Jens Cajuste and Hamza Choudhury.
