Fuming Moyes aims barb at authorities; makes January transfer pledge for West Ham
West Ham boss David Moyes took aim at the Covid-induced fixture scheduling after watching his side crash at home to Leeds United.
The Hammers lost 3-2 in a pulsating contest at the London Stadium. The visitors were a goal to the good in just the tenth minute as Jack Harrison scored the first of his three goals. Jarrod Bowen pulled one back but the Whites led 2-1 at the break as Harrison bagged once again.
Pablo Fornals drew the hosts level early in the second half but Harrison earned the match ball with his third on 60 minutes. Both sides had the ball in the net again but the efforts were chalked off for offside.
Moyes was far from happy after the final whistle. But his tirade was not aimed at his players but at the perceived injustice of playing an extra game this week.
“Leeds have two games [extra] to play and we had one so I can’t see why Leeds didn’t play in midweek, but we were made to play ours,” he told BBC Match of the Day.
“The players have done so well but today we didn’t perform. Playing Leeds twice is really difficult but also then you squeeze in a Premier League game too, which wasn’t needed.
“The Premier League aren’t getting it right at the moment. The other managers will tell you how hard it is to play against the effort and energy of Leeds.
“We then get a game put in and I find it hard to accept but the game has taken place and we didn’t play well enough to win the game and we have to accept that. We got caught on the ball a couple of times.”
Moyes irked by late miss
It was a thrilling contest to watch in the East End. West Ham could have taken a point but Bowen missed a sitter late on.
Moyes refused to have a dig at the in-form star but hinted that the midfielder made the wrong decision.
“I have had a look at it and I can’t see why he couldn’t go with his head,” he added. “This was a simple one and I don’t know many players that score with their chest. But he has been playing very well and he scored another one today, so there is no criticism of him.”
No knee-jerk signings for Moyes
West Ham have been linked with many players during the January transfer window. But the Scot made it clear he will not recruit players just to boost his numbers.
“The club and the board are happy for me to bring people in but it’s up to me to find the right players,” Moyes continued. “You want to bring good players where your own players think you are adding to the squad.
“You don’t want to bring players that aren’t going to make a lot of difference. I’m trying to be a bit picky.”
