Gary Neville delivers Leeds relegation verdict as pundit dampens Jesse Marsch belief
Gary Neville was far from impressed with Leeds United’s win over Norwich City on Sunday and says Jesse Marsch’s men are still in trouble as they look to beat the drop.
Heading into the clash against the bottom club, three points were an absolute must. And they got them thanks to a 2-1 win. However the scoreline does not tell the whole story as it was almost two points dropped.
Kenny McLean’s injury-time strike cancelled out Rodrigo’s first-half goal and looked to have earned the Canaries a point. That was until substitute Joe Gelhardt snatched the winner moments later.
It was a thrilling finale to a game Leeds United had to win and could be the turning point in the battle to stay up.
The win moves Leeds four points clear of the drop zone although Burnley in 19th have two games in hand. They could jump above the whites with two wins, but it’s all about points in the bag at this stage.
Marsch was upbeat after the game and claimed that his blueprint for getting Leeds results and keeping them in the Premier League is slowly coming together. But Neville is not convinced.
Gary Neville not impressed
Even so Neville was not overly impressed when he appeared on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
Neville was not at Elland Road at the weekend and did not see any of the game. But three points against the cellar-dwellers was nothing special according to the former Manchester United star.
The pundit preferred to focus on the 3-0 home defeat against Aston Villa in the previous game. It was a game Neville did see and he believes Leeds are still in trouble despite their heroics at the weekend.
“I think they’re in a little bit of trouble. I saw them against Aston Villa and they were awful. I didn’t see the weekend game, but you expect them to beat Norwich,” Neville told Monday Night Football.
In fairness Leeds are still in trouble and by no means out of the woods just yet. They have tougher games to come starting with a trip to Wolves on Friday night.
Leeds spirits lifted
More points are needed but at least the win over Norwich and the manner of it will lift spirits at the club.
Neville is not convinced though and thinks Leeds United have been on the slide for a while. Following the sacking of Marcelo Bielsa he did offer a bit of sympathy. He admitted to being excited by the way Leeds played their football before they started to fall away.
“I think a little bit of sadness because of the fact when you went to watch Leeds play, I’ve enjoyed great games,” he told Sky Sports.
“But the fact of the matter is in the last few weeks, months, it’s become really desperate. And you go from admiration to despair watching them and thinking they’re just not really exciting anymore, they’re really bad.
“But there is some sadness because Leeds games were always exciting to watch.”
Leeds now need a big win at Molineux before the international break. Then maybe Neville will change his mind.
