Gary Neville says Everton, Newcastle will survive, but names two clubs to get ‘dragged in’

Gary Neville feels Everton “will get out of” the Premier League relegation scrap, though Brentford and Leeds United could struggle to stay up.

A number of sides have looked as if they could be in danger regarding their Premier League survival of late. Indeed, Everton went on a terrible run following their victory against Arsenal, failing to win until two months later.

However, the 3-0 victory versus Leeds United – Frank Lampard’s first in the league at Everton – has put minds at ease.

Sky Sports pundit Neville feels as if the Toffees will avoid the drop.

“I think Everton will get out of it. I think Leeds could get dragged in. Brentford, I would be worried about. They have played a few more games. That Newcastle team. That performance isn’t going down,” he said, quoted by Liverpool Echo.

However, that puts emphasis on the teams around them. Brentford and Leeds are both within two points of Everton, having played more games.

“There’s no doubt that there are one or two of those sides, Leeds and Brentford, who could get dragged back into if they are not careful,” Neville added.

Despite putting in impressive performances this season, both sides have gone on poor runs recently. Brentford have won just one league game in 2022, and Leeds have only won twice since December.

“They would be big losses to the Premier League, by the way. But Brentford and Leeds have brought a lot. I always see great games when those two are playing. But that won’t count for anything,” Neville said.

Indeed, good performances mean little if a side is on the wrong end of a result. The pair need to find ways of turning those performances into results, or they face the threat of relegation.

Lampard impressed after big Everton win

Lampard has commended his side for the big victory against fellow-strugglers Leeds at the weekend. The win ended a run of four-straight league losses.

“It was nice. An incredible afternoon. What we did today was something special in terms of the performance,” he said.

“It showed an attitude, aggression and work rate. The fans, when they see what the players are putting into the game. What they give us. It has to be the start.”

The victory eased pressure on the Toffees, and more performances of that nature should hoist them to safety.
