Harry Kewell makes ‘frightening’ Leeds relegation claim, with Burnley comparison made
Harry Kewell has admitted that it is “frightening” to see Leeds United back in the relegation battle with Burnley and Everton.
The Whites were deep in trouble towards the end of Marcelo Bielsa’s reign. Indeed, six successive Premier League games without victory – including four straight defeats – cost the Argentine his job.
Jesse Marsch stepped in and despite two more losses to start his reign, Leeds have since gone unbeaten in four games.
Marsch has inspired three wins in that run and it has looked as if Leeds are moving clear of a relegation battle. However, Burnley have been playing catch-up with their games in hand and have made significant progress.
In fact, Sunday’s 1-0 win over Wolves moved them into 17th, a point behind Leeds in 16th. Everton dropped to 18th after the Clarets’ latest win and stayed there following their 2-0 loss to Liverpool.
Leeds are looking to respond to Sunday’s developments by beating Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday.
Nevertheless, Kewell told Premier League Productions of his fears for Leeds if they take no points from the trip to London.
“I know, it’s frightening to see,” the former Elland Road star said. “It’s slightly disappointing because they are a fantastic club and they’ve worked so hard to get where they’ve got.
“But looking at their run-in, again I have to agree with Michael [Owen], I’d be happy to be in Burnley’s situation at the moment.
“The new manager, getting a couple of wins, the momentum’s there. With Everton and Leeds, they’ve got a tough run-in and it’s going to be difficult.
“If they can scrape through tomorrow and get three points, maybe that can ease the pressure. But it’s definitely going to be difficult for Leeds.”
Asked if Leeds need to take points from Palace, Kewell added: “One hundred per cent – and I’m not just saying one point.
“I’d like to see them get three to get that breathing space because the next three games are going to be very difficult for them.”
Leeds, Everton and Burnley in scrap
Leeds still have to play Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea before the season is over,
Burnley have to go to Tottenham and play Aston Villa twice.
Everton, meanwhile, play Chelsea next and Arsenal on the final day of the season.
The Clarets have had to contend with a number of postponements throughout the season. However, they have done well to claim points from those matches.
They drew 0-0 with Watford before beating Everton 3-2 and Tottenham 1-0 in three particular games in hand.
