‘I expect this to happen’; agent gives Newcastle hope as eager ex-Prem star back in training

Midfielder Christian Eriksen is now training with Ajax as he attempts a comeback and return to the Premier League in January.

The 29-year-old’s playing career seemed over following events during last summer’s European Championship. The former Tottenham ace suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed while playing against Finland in Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener. Players and spectators alike were visibly shaken at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium but thankfully the Scandinavian recovered.

He was fitted with an ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator). Italian rules meant he could not play in Serie A with the device but the law does not apply to England.

And, after being released by Inter, the ex-Ajax star made it clear he is keen to get back out onto the pitch. A number of clubs have been linked.

Fulham, Brentford and Leicester City have been mentioned in connection with the talented schemer. Cash-rich Newcastle United entered the picture earlier this week.

And his agent, Martin Schoots, has made it clear that the man with 109 Denmark caps craves a return to England.

“Christian wants to go to the Premier League and I expect this to happen,” he told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “He wants to go to a club where he can play as much as possible. To be able to play at the World Cup, he has to get fit and be active at the highest level.”

Ajax happy to help former star

Eriksen came up through the Ajax youth system before making his debut in January 2010. He made 162 appearances in total for the Amsterdam giants, scoring 32 goals.

Tottenham came calling in August 2013 and the Middelfart-born ace enjoyed seven seasons in north London. He scored 69 goals from 305 outings before moving to Italy.

That adventure is now over but he could be about to start another one back in the Premier League. Spurs offered him the chance to use their facilities as he attempts to get up to speed.

But he was training with the Ajax reserves on Friday, according to reports. Eriksen has his sights set on a place at this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

He will need to convince Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand that he is fit and ready to deal with the stresses of tournament football. Therefore playing regular top-flight football over the next ten months will be critical.

He has started with Jong Ajax but has intentions to get back to the top of the sport.
