‘I’d have thought you were on drugs,’ says Warnock on Boro pair

Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock was full of praise for defenders Sol Bamba and Lee Peltier following his side’s 2-0 victory over Cardiff City.

The victory was Boro’s fourth win in five, and they have also managed to maintain a clean sheet in each of those wins. The defensive duo of Bamba and Peltier have played their part in each victory, and the pair have looked solid at the back throughout the campaign. But Warnock admitted he didn’t expect their seasons to be quite so successful.

Speaking in his post-match interview, he said: “If you’d have told me at the start of the season that Sol Bamba and Lee Peltier would be playing regularly for me – well I’d have thought you were drinking or on drugs.

“They were just in the squad to make the numbers up. But they’ve both taken their chances  and credit to them both, they’re brilliant.

“On and off the field they are a credit to manage.”

Aged 36 and 34 respectively, Bamba and Peltier were not expected to be crucial figures for Boro this season.

But the veteran pairing have gone against the odds, and appear to be becoming the first names on Warnock’s team sheet.

This is even more impressive for Bamba, who only became cancer-free in May having been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

The pair will now be looking to continue their impressive run of form as Boro climb further up the Championship table.

Warnock credits side for handling pressure

Whilst the game was relatively smooth-running for Boro, after half-time they did come under some threat from their opponents.

Cardiff came out of the dressing room looking like a new team, but Middlesbrough stuffed the pressure and maintained their lead.

Warnock praised these ten minutes as a key moment in the match, and complimented how his squad dealt with the pressure.

“We won that game because of the ten minutes after half-time when we were right under the cosh.

“We put heads and bodies on the line and protected our goal. That’s what I love to see.”
