Jose Mourinho told bringing massive Man Utd flop to Roma will cost €30m

Jose Mourinho continues to be linked with a number of Premier League stars following his appointment as Roma boss, with a Manchester United flop now reportedly on his radar.

The Portuguese will take over at the Serie A club at the end of the season, having been announced as Roma’s new boss earlier this week. Mourinho took the role after been sacked by Tottenham last month after a hugely disappointing 17-month spell in north London.

He has already been linked with moves for four of his old Spurs stars, along with United playmaker Juan Mata.

But now a report on Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) claims that Red Devils misfit Donny van de Beek is a target.

The Italian outlet states that the Holland midfielder is on Mourinho’s wishlist of targets. It’s also stated that Roma made an approach for the player before the new manager was announced.

However, at the time United wanted impressive playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo in return. But Roma were not interested in a swap deal.

The report adds that Van de Beek would cost around €30m (£26m). That is potentially £14m less than United paid for him, although £5m of the £40m fee was in add-ons.

Calcio adds that Mourinho got to know Van de Beek in England. However, he was not in charge of United when they signed the player.

Tottenham were, however, also in the hunt for the player last summer. With that being the case, Mourinho may well have spoken to him about a switch to the Premier League at that time.

The midfielder has scored once in 33 appearances for United this season, although he has made just 16 league appearances.

Sancho price plummets

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund’s reduced asking price for Jadon Sancho is even lower than first believed, according to a report – but a Premier League move is still in doubt.

Sancho was the focus of intense interest from Manchester United last summer, but Dortmund stood firm. They set a €120m (£108m) asking price and stuck to it. United tested their resolve with lower bids but the German club were not interested in negotiating.

This season has been a bit more challenging for Sancho. He has only scored six goals in the Bundesliga, compared to 17 last term. All his goals this season have come since the turn of the year, so he has been getting back into his stride.

But amid his slight downturn in form, coupled with the lasting effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dortmund have become aware that they may no longer be able to command the same fee.

They have had an agreement in place with Sancho that would allow him to leave this summer, as long as certain conditions are met. According to Goal, one of those is that they receive £78m as a transfer fee.

That would be a £30m reduction on his value last summer, and also even lower than the figure that was suggested recently. Just earlier this week, ESPN claimed he would cost £87m.

But it seems Dortmund have softened their stance even further. That should come as a boost for several Premier League clubs.

However, Goal indicates that many of Sancho’s suitors have cooled their interest. For example, Man Utd are still reluctant to finance a big-money move.
