Last throw of dice for Bundesliga side try as Arsenal, Man City eye signing

Arsenal and Manchester City are in the hunt for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria, according to a report.

Zakaria, 24, has just 12 months on his contract with the Bundesliga side and has yet to signal his intention to sign a new deal.

Monchengladbach will not want to lose the defensive midfielder for free next summer and so will be looking to sell the Switzerland international if they can not tie him down to a new contract.

That all seems to lie with new coach Adi Hütter, who knows Zakaria from their time together with Young Boys.

The German side’s officials want to keep the talented midfielder. Gladbach sports director Max Eber wants the player tied down to a new deal, but the player is leaning towards a new challenge.

Zakaria, speaking previously about Hutter, told Sport Bild: “He was like a father to me because he helped me a lot. We have a very good relationship.”

According to Tag 24 the pair will hold talks later this month when the player returns from vacation.

It then will be down to Hutter to persuade the experienced midfielder to extend his time with the German outfit.

The same outlet also report interest from Arsenal and Manchester City. The Premier League pair are said to be “monitoring” the situation and could make swoop should the player signal his intentions to move on.

German options

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are also potential suitors.

Arsenal’s links with Zakaria date back to 2019. However a move was halted when Zakaria picked up a serious knee injury in March 2020.

Zakaria returned from that injury to make 32 appearances for Monchengladbach in all competitions during the last campaign.

He may well be the perfect replacement for Granit Xhaka. All the signs are that Zakaria’s fellow Swiss midfielder is heading out to Roma. Xhaka has pretty much said he is looking for a move away from north London and Jose Mourinho is keen.

Zakaria may well be a good fit alongside Thomas Partey.
