Leeds eye familiar £40m-rated star, but two issues could scupper Jesse Marsch pursuit
Leeds United are reportedly keen on RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, though a deal could prove difficult for a couple of reasons.
Leeds were keen on the signing of Gvardiol in 2020, but were beaten to the punch by Leipzig. The centre-back reportedly preferred the move to the German club due to Leeds’ apparent persistence.
What’s more, the prospect of moving to Leipzig was seen as a good option in terms of development.
Indeed, Gvardiol appears to be progressing well in Germany. The 20-year-old has missed just two league games this season, and has contributed to four goals and seven clean sheets in the Bundesliga.
Leipzig currently sit in fourth place in the league. Despite failing to make the knockout stages of the Champions League, Gvardiol also played a part in each game.
As such, it appears the young defender is thriving at Leipzig. His competent performances have led to a number of sides reportedly registering an interest.
Arsenal, Tottenham and Newcastle United have all cropped up of late. What’s more, Leeds are reported to have renewed their interest in the former target, per Football Insider.
Leeds’ reported interest previously dates back a couple of years. Of course, Marcelo Bielsa was at the helm during that period, and he was the coach who attempted to sign Gvardiol.
However, it seems Jesse Marsch is as much of a fan as Bielsa was.
The American will be familiar with Gvardiol, given there was a crossover in the pair being at Leipzig.
Gvardiol price tag could hinder Leeds
The report that mentions Leeds’ renewed interest also states Leipzig value Gvardiol at £28million. That price is slightly more than the record fee the Whites paid for Rodrigo in 2020.
As such, Leeds may be priced out of a potential deal for the centre-back.
Furthermore, there is a discrepancy between that price tag and one from another recent report. Indeed, it was recently stated that Leipzig would look for north of £40million for Gvardiol.
That is due to the 20-year-old’s contract running until 2026. As such, Leeds may be out of luck regarding their pursuit of the star.
