Leeds given mountain to climb as club land €36m Bielsa blow over target

Hertha Berlin have given Leeds an uphill task if they want to prise striker Matheus Cunha out of the club, according to a report.

Previous reports have claimed that the Whites have shown interest in the Brazilian attacker. Sky Germany reporter Max Bielefield claimed that Leeds have followed the player closely for ‘several months’. Furthermore, the journalist added that Hertha would consider selling for €30million (£25million).

According to a fresh report from Kicker, though, Hertha have taken action to make it harder for interested parties to snap up their star player.

Indeed, they have extended Cunha’s contract by one year, with those terms now expiring in the summer of 2025.

They have also reportedly increased his valuation to €36million (£30million). While Leeds may have considered paying his original fee, £30million could prove too high a price.

However, that is the price which Hertha paid to bring Cunha across Germany from RB Leipzig last January.

What’s more, since moving, he has enjoyed a fantastic resurgence.

The 21-year-old moved to Leipzig from Sion in 2017 but initially struggled to find his feet in German football. In fact, he only scored two Bundesliga goals in 25 games in his first season.

After going half of last term without a goal, Cunha moved across the country and hit five for Hertha in 11 games.

This term, meanwhile, he hit six goals and assisted two others in his first eight league games. Since then, though, he has scored only one other Bundesliga goal.

Reports have linked Leeds with swoops for other star forwards, including Club Brugge winger Noa Lang.

Leeds star told to sign for Newcastle

Meanwhile, Tyler Roberts has been told to move away from Leeds and sign for Newcastle.

The forward has endured a stop-start campaign but is set for a strong end after netting his first Premier League goal on Wednesday.

Nevertheless, his future remains a subject of debate.
