Leicester v Tottenham off as full-scale football shutdown fears grow
The Premier League game between Leicester and Tottenham at the King Power Stadium on Thursday evening has been postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the hosts’ camp.
The decision comes after the Foxes asked the Premier League for a postponement in light of further covid cases in their camp.
Tottenham had already travelled and were staying in a hotel close to the King Power Stadium ahead of the match.
The game becomes the latest postponement this week after Brentford v Manchester United and Burnley against Watford also fell by the wayside.
News of the latest postponement will increase fears that football again could be shut down amid heightening Covid fears.
Speculation suggests Manchester United’s home date with Brighton on Saturday is also in peril.
Frank calls on authorities to act over Covid
Now Brentford boss Thomas Frank wants the Premier League to call off all games until Boxing Day at the earliest.
“We think we should postpone the full round of Premier League games this weekend,” he said on Thursday morning.
“Covid cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs, everyone is dealing with it and having problems.
“To postpone this round and also the Carabao Cup round would give everyone a week at least, or four or five days to clean. We need to do everything at the training ground so everything is clean. Then you break the chain.”
Frank was informed of four more Covid cases overnight – bringing the current total involving players and staff at the club to 13 – midway through his Thursday morning press conference.
Frank still hopes Festive programme can go ahead
And he believes a decision to halt this weekend’s round of top-flight fixtures could be enough to sure the busy festive programme will be able to go ahead largely as planned.
“We fully respect that we want to play and it is important football keeps going. But this way we can make sure Boxing Day keeps going, I’m 100 per cent sure of that,” added Frank.
“This Omicron variant is running like wildfire around the world. I think we need to do all we can to protect and avoid it. I think we can do a lot by closing down training grounds for three, four or five days. Then we can go again.”
The match is also Tottenham’s second successive Premier League postponement after their game at Burnley fell victim to the weather.
