Liverpool cited as a ‘selling club’ in mega four-way fight to sign 149-goal striker
Liverpool have been labelled a ‘selling club’ as the race to snap up prolific Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland begins to hot up.
The Reds were once again recently tipped as contenders to snap up the Norway international hotshot, in a move that would likely point to a change in playing style for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Klopp does not traditionally play will an out and out No.9 and instead prefers a more fluid attacking three.
That would all change if Haaland made the move to Merseyside. However, there are a trio of other clubs who will have something to say about that.
Spanish outlet AS states that Barcelona boss Xavi continues to have Haaland as his top target this summer.
However, the report does add that the amount of commission that would need to be paid to Haaland’s father, as well as agent Mino Raiola could force Barca to look elsewhere.
Doing such a thing may well lead them to Liverpool and Mo Salah, who AS states is a Haaland alternative for the Catalan giants.
Fellow LaLiga giants Real Madrid are also keen on the 21-year-old, although they have financial issues of their own.
Manchester City also remain in the running for Haaland’s signature. That is largely due to their links to the player’s father, former City defender Alf Inge Haaland.
Haaland decision due next month
Haaland’s future is expected to be known before April 30. That gives Barcelona plenty of time to pursue other targets if the Dortmund star decides to go elsewhere.
But another Spanish publication, Sport, believes Liverpool are effectively out of the running.
They cite Philippe Coutinho’s big-money switch to the Nou Camp in 2018 as a reason to label the Reds as a ‘selling club’ and therefore not viewing them as genuine Haaland contenders.
That statement is harsh, considering the Brazilian had his head turned by Barca and wanted out. Liverpool also received an incredible £105million, rising to £142 million, for a player who is now on loan at Aston Villa.
At this stage, it remains to be seen where Haaland’s future lies but if Klopp wants him, there is a good chance that the Reds will at the very least be part of the bidding proccess.
