Liverpool urged to strike deal for Salah replacement once deemed not good enough for West Brom
Liverpool have been urged to look into signing Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry as an ideal replacement for Mo Salah, if the Egypt forward quits Anfield.
The Germany international, 26, has been a revelation since joining Bayern in 2017. Gnabry has 61 goals and 40 assists to his name in 163 matches for the club. In each of his full seasons in Bavaria, Bayern have won the Bundesliga and completed the treble in 2019-20.
However, according to Goal, Gnabry’s time at Bayern could come to a screeching halt.
The ex-Gunner will see his current contract expire in 2023. With next season poised to be his last, Bayern are said to be feverishly trying to pin him down to fresh terms.
However, the German giant have reigned in their spending since the Covid pandemic struck and Gnabry could be a surprise casualty.
To that end, former Scotland defender Alan Hutton believes the Reds should strike for a player who made one Premier League appearance in an ill-fated loan spell at West Brom back in 2015-16.
“It’s amazing to think Tony Pulis said he wasn’t good enough for West Brom. That’s funny to think about,” Hutton told Football Insider. (via Caught Offside).
“He’s obviously a very talented football player. He’s done really well at Bayern Munich and with one year left, maybe he’s thinking it’s time for a change.
“Of course he would fit into that Liverpool squad no problem. He’s obviously very technical, he understands, he’s had a good upbringing the last few years at Bayern Munich.
Hutton hails Liverpool approach to signings
“I just like what Liverpool are doing at the moment, who they are looking at recruitment-wise. Younger, hungry players but also they’ve proved it on big stages as well.
“They’re really moving forward. You need a plan A and a plan B. If A doesn’t work, you need to be ready to bring somebody in. If Salah does happen to leave, they’ll need a replacement through the door.
“They’re doing their work behind the scenes at the moment, sounding people out. Who could come in and slot into this formation? He’s definitely one of them.”
But despite all the rumours that Salah could move on, there is a growing belief he will actually extend his stay.
