Lloris swerves risky Tottenham question before making ‘extreme’ Conte admission

Hugo Lloris has smartly side-stepped a question about the weight of responsibility he feels at Tottenham Hotspur during their trophy drought, insisting things are moving in the right direction under Antonio Conte.

Lloris has been with Tottenham for almost a decade but is yet to get his hands on any silverware. He has generally been a consistent player for them in goal over the years. But there are a lack of medals in his cabinet to show for it.

The Frenchman has been involved in many peaks and troughs of the Tottenham journey in recent years. When things have got tough, the club have seemed overly reliant on a couple of key players.

According to one L’Equipe interviewer in his homeland, Lloris is one of them and the other is Harry Kane. Indeed, the goalkeeper has been asked if he is “tired” of “carrying” a trophyless team.

But the experienced goalkeeper is instead focusing on what Tottenham are building so they can close the gap with their rivals.

He replied: “The important thing is to keep this desire to win! Afterwards, football, we win, we lose, but we have to start by giving ourselves chances to do so, and that’s what we’re doing at the moment.

“But we are in England, we have monsters ahead of us, with more resources than ours. By doing things smartly, we can get closer.”

One factor helping Tottenham is the presence of Conte as their head coach. He replaced former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo earlier in the season after previously rejecting the job in the summer.

Lloris feels ‘evolution’ under ‘extreme’ Conte

Serial winner Conte has lifted Tottenham up to fifth in the Premier League. Breaking into the top four still looks tough, but as long as he stays for next season, things could get better.

Lloris has noticed their progress and is confident of them getting back where they feel they belong.

He added: “Before projecting yourself, you have to take everything there is to take from a coach like him.

“February was a little more difficult but we, inside the team, we feel a progression, a real understanding of the structure he wants to give, and I think that something is happening.

“He brought his passion, which can be extreme, his system, his style of play, and in four months, which is really not much, we feel an evolution. We hope it will lead to a good end to the season.

“With him, we have a common goal: to surpass ourselves, to relive great moments in the Champions League. He lives football 200%, and there are plenty of things to learn from him, and to keep.”
