Man Utd identify attacking left-back as Ralf Rangnick pursues Luke Shaw upgrade

Manchester United reportedly have their eyes on a Bundesliga defender as they look to upgrade their left-back options in the summer.

Luke Shaw’s performances have been far from the levels he has set with England and he admitted the whole team need to step up. The unwanted 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday left Shaw with the feeling of deja vu.

“I think history is sort of repeating itself, really,” Shaw told MUTV. “We need to improve fast. We need to get results. The most important thing is results and points.

“Where we want to be, what we want to achieve for the rest of the season, if we keep dropping points, we’re not going to get into the Champions League.”

Shaw, 26, has been United’s main man at left-back this season although injuries have halted his game time under Ralf Rangnick.

Alex Telles has been the man to step into the void, but A “lack of confidence” in the Brazilian means Rangnick wants a better option.

And as per Spanish outlet Fichajes, they claim United have set their sights on Ramy Bensebaini from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 26-year-old is under contract until 2023 and has played 73 games for the German side. He has 17 goals and seven assists in that time and has made 45 international appearances for Algeria.

Bensebaini started all three African Nations Cup group games as Algeria were eliminated at the group stage.

He is a defender who like to attack, something United have been missing and has been interested Inter Milan.

Bensebaini not keen on new Monchengladbach contract

Inter though landed Germany international Robin Gosens last month. Gosens signed from Atalanta, whilst injured and has yet to play for the Nerazzurri.

The report now states United have “entered the race” for Bensebaini with a price tag of €25m likely.

His versatility makes him an interesting proposition. He has played centre-back in a back three and in a back four. While he has played at left-back and left midfield.

He has five goals and two assists from 14 games this season and was linked with West Ham last summer.

Roma were also linked with the player, with the Corriere dello Sport reporting that Gladbach wanted around €20m for the player, who was not intending to sign a new contract.
