Man Utd plans upturned as Erling Haaland becomes giant’s ‘top priority’ with transfer to ‘immediately’ take shape
Erling Haaland will reportedly be the “top priority” of Paris Saint-Germain if they lose Kylian Mbappe, in what would be a blow to his Premier League suitors.
Mbappe expressed a desire to leave PSG during the summer. Real Madrid were particularly interested in acquiring his services. But the French giants rejected their big bids, even though only one year remains on his contract.
They retain some hope that he will sign a new deal, although relations between club and player are not the strongest at present. Therefore, it seems more likely he will be departing next year – likely as a free agent.
It may make them regret their decision not to accept one of Madrid’s major offers. Replacing Mbappe will likely cost them a huge sum.
PSG will need to find a top-quality player to fill his role in between Lionel Messi and Neymar. Thanks to their financial power, they will be in the market for some of the most high-profile stars.
According to Le10 Sport, PSG will “immediately pounce” for Haaland if they lose Mbappe.
The Borussia Dortmund striker is, along with the Frenchman, one of the most promising, yet already established, players in the world. They are both expected to compete for the Ballon d’Or throughout their careers.
PSG had Haaland in mind when Madrid came calling for Mbappe in the summer, but it was ultimately too late. Instead, they stuck with their current star.
But if he does not sign a new deal, Paris will once again look to replace him with Haaland, whose release clause will be active next summer.
The Norway international will be available for a figure that, although not cheap, does not necessarily reflect his true value. Therefore, several clubs are willing to activate his clause.
Haaland has been linked with a Premier League transfer, to either Manchester United, Manchester City or Liverpool. Even Newcastle have been tipped to get involved after their takeover.
But if his future is in France instead, his English suitors would have to look elsewhere.
PSG have Haaland backup plans
Nevertheless, Haaland is not the only striker PSG are considering for a post-Mbappe era. Their next option, if they miss out, would be another big name from the Bundesliga.
The report from Le10 Sport continues that Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich is PSG’s plan B. He would be a shorter-term reinforcement than Haaland, but remains one of the best in the world at the age of 33.
The Poland international was recently linked with Manchester City, who didn’t sign a replacement for Sergio Aguero in the summer.
Dusan Vlahovic is another name City are keeping in mind should they wish to rectify that – but he too is on PSG’s shortlist.
Vlahovic has undergone a huge development – both physically and technically – in recent years with Fiorentina. He is now one of the most promising centre-forwards in the world, along with the likes of Haaland.
It seems he too could have to make a choice between Paris or the Premier League.
