Marcus Rashford has been accused of “becoming a ghost” at times for Man Utd this season, though a report has revealed why his course could soon be corrected.

Rashford is in the midst of his worst ever season at Manchester United with his output down across the board. The 24-year-old has just five goals and two assists to his name in all competitions this season.

His previous low in terms of goals in a single season was eight (2015/16), though that figure was notched in just 18 matches when Rashford was aged 18.

Rashford’s season at club level hit rock bottom when overlooked for the derby with Manchester City on March 6.

Despite United being without Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani that day, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes were selected to spearhead the attack in a double false nine.

Rashford’s continued struggles saw him axed from Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad for the friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.

With the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Bukayo Saka taking great strides forward this year, Rashford is facing an uphill struggle to earn a place at Qatar 2022.

Now, a report from ESPN has shed light on the root cause of Rashford’s struggles this year. However, in the same report was a scathing assessment of a troublesome trait he has unfortunately developed.

Rashford struggles explained

The article cites a source that claimed Rashford has developed a habit of “becoming a ghost” during matches when things don’t go his way. Rather than dig in and battle to make an impact, Rashford goes missing.

Other sources have told the outlet Rashford’s struggles stem from his aborted pre-season.

The forward went all the way to the finals of Euro 2020 with England before taking a holiday. That pushed an operation on his shoulder issue further back, thus disrupting his pre-season preparations.

United’s fixtures have come thick and fast since Rashford returned to action in mid-October. As such, he was reportedly unable to build up the required levels of fitness and conditioning since returning.

However, his omission from the latest England squad has given Rashford an opportunity to put that right.

ESPN add he is working on his fitness during a rare in-season two-week break. That is music to the ears of interim boss Ralf Rangnick who it’s claimed concurs Rashford’s poor form is fitness-related.
