Marsch reveals emotion at Joe Gelhardt’s Norwich winner; names seven stand-out U23s at Leeds
Leeds manager Jesse Marsch has come clean on the jubliation running through his body following Joe Gelhardt’s dramatic winner against Norwich on Sunday.
The Whites looked in control at Elland Road, but only had a Rodrigo goal to show for their efforts. And that allowed Norwich to start gaining a footbhold in the game, scoring an equaliser in the first minute of added-on time. However, Leeds United refused to lie down, scoring an exhilarating winner through Gelhardt after some Raphinha magic.
The goal sparked wild celebrations at Elland Road, with Marsch almost losing his feet as he celebrated a first Leeds win.
Now, lifting the lid on those incredible scenes, Marsch has explained what went through his mind.
“Immediate jubilation because the moment is tense,” he stated. “Focus was what to do, as soon as we conceded we ask how we affect the game now.
“We had one more sub: Joffy [Joe Gelhardt]. You just feel jubilation and then assess to what we have, our options, adjust the formation to protect ourselves. We’ve gotten better at that with more experience. Younger manager would be celebrating and thinking about the lead.”
Leeds will hope to carry that winning momentum into Friday’s clash with Wolves. And they will go into the game with four key players all seemingly set to play a part.
Coach on inspiring Leeds to win
Asked about how he helped inspire an improved display from the Villa defeat to the Norwich win, Marsch was staying modest.
“That was what we talked about and creating a matchplan that was clear and simple. I have to learn here too about the players, the stadium and the fans. Thursday was a crash course for me too.
“You have to evaluate myself and what’s important for me to do the job effectively. Impact the group and the team. Love days like last Friday because I had to come up with solutions to problems after a tough result.
“We had a small conversations with players, group and leadership. Goal to come out better and stronger.”
Jesse Marsch hails Archie Gray after Under-23s super-show
Jesse Marsch was in attendance in midweek as Leeds U23s romped to a 3-0 win over Manchester United at Elland Road.
Asked about the teenager and the Under-23s in general, Marsch continued: “A lot of those guys played very well. [Sam] Greenwood and Crysencio Summerville played very well. [Jack] Jenkins very good in the midfield. Two centre-backs were very good and Kristoffer in goal.
“Archie comes off the bench. Massive anticipation, intelligent, reads the game well, runs all day. He has an incredible blood line. Homegrown talent, but we have to support him and be patient with him without putting too much on his shoulders.
“He’s excited to be on the pitch every day. He just loves training. He has very strong qualities as a person that will help him develop.”
