Marsch reveals Rangnick caused an ‘explosion in his head’, as Leeds boss lauds Man Utd tactician

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has hailed Manchester United counterpart Ralf Rangnick as a major influence on his coaching career.

Marsch has recently moved to Elland Road looking to steer the Whites away from a relegation battle. While he suffered an indifferent start to life in the Premier League, Leeds have secured back-to-back wins.

Marsch, 48, started his coaching career in his native America as the USA national team’s assistant manager.

However, he entered the Red Bull football stable with New York Red Bulls in 2015. And in 2018, Rangnick snapped him up.

Indeed, Rangnick was six years into a sporting director role at Leipzig and RB Salzburg at that point. But he became the Leipzig manager and brought in Marsch as his assistant.

Marsch then became Salzburg manager, with Rangnick overseeing the operation as sporting director. The American then moved back to Leipzig as manager before parting ways with the German club in December.

And after spending a lot of his coaching career so far working with Rangnick, Marsch has hailed the German as a major influence.

“The first thing I learned was how specific and detailed the Germans are in the way they think and talk about football,” the manager told The Athletic. “They’re lasered-in on the smallest of details.

Marsch hails fellow coach Rangnick

“It’s a quality of Germans, I think. They’re very detail orientated and specific.

“I thought I was detail orientated about football until I met Rangnick. Then I knew I wasn’t.

“This was a guy who worked through a system, a vocabulary and methodology that I never even thought was possible. I called it an explosion in my head because it taught me a new way of thinking.

“From there, I was learning more and more and detailing things more and more. It was an important moment for me.”

While Marsch left Leipzig in December, Rangnick left his previous role at Lokomotiv Moscow a month before.

The 63-year-old has somewhat  stabilised results at Man Utd and a Premier League top-four finish is still possible. Nevertheless, he has faced criticism for his overall lack of impact at the club.

Former Leipzig coaches eyeing Premier League stay

Marsch will hope he can now use Rangnick’s guidance to continue Leeds’ Premier League revival.

The 3-2 comeback win over Wolves last Friday galvanised the side even more, following the dramatic 2-1 win over Norwich.

Meanwhile, Rangnick is increasingly unlikely to stay in the United dugout.

Still, he will soon take on an Old Trafford consultancy role helping club chiefs take a range of decisions.

Transfers is one of the key areas he has experience in following his work as a sporting director at Leipzig.
