Newcastle United assistant manager Jason Tindall has reiterated that there will be no quick fixes for the club after the first game of the Eddie Howe era ended as a 3-3 draw against Brentford.

Howe was unable to be on the touchline for his first game as Newcastle manager due to testing positive for coronavirus. Assistant boss Tindall stepped up in his absence, seeing the side they have inherited claim a point at home.

Newcastle took the lead through Jamaal Lascelles but their former player Ivan Toney hit back a minute later. Rico Henry then put the visitors ahead before Joelinton restored parity by half-time.

A Lascelles own goal put Brentford back ahead beyond the hour mark but Allan Saint-Maximin earned another equaliser to ensure Newcastle kept a share of the spoils.

The wait for a first win of the season in the Premier League goes on, though. Howe, Tindall and the rest of the staff have plenty of work ahead of them.

Tindall said: “When we arrived at the football club, the team were where they were and since we’ve been here, we’ve just tried to implement our philosophy on the group of players as quickly and the best we can.

“It was never going to be such a quick fix to do that.

“We can’t focus on the league table, we can’t focus on anybody else other than ourselves. We’ve still got a lot of work to do, but today, there were a lot of positives to take into next week.

“Obviously, it wasn’t the result we wanted. We wanted to win the game and set up to win the game.

“But we’ve obviously conceded three goals and we were disappointed with them. We’ll look at those collectively and individually and we’ll need to put them right on the training ground.”

Newcastle have seven days to wait before their next game, away at Arsenal. It remains to be seen if Howe will be able to lead the team for that game.

Tindall added: “Hopefully we can have Ed back before the Arsenal game. We’re just waiting on the doctor for that.

“That’s a little bit out of our hands and control. Ed will be a big influence on how we prepare.”

Frank frustrated not to take win back

Brentford are one of the sides Newcastle will be aiming to overtake as they seek to avoid relegation.

They have made a decent start to life in the Premier League, but Thomas Frank saw this as two points dropped for them.

The Brentford boss said: “When you’re leading twice, it’s a little bit frustrating that you don’t get three points. That’s the frustration.

“When you score three goals in a Premier League game – home or away or in any game across the world – you need to be able to get three points.

“(It is) very positive scoring three goals, very positive that we created a lot of dangerous situations and chances to have scored more.

“The big thing we need to improve from this game is we need to defend better.”
