Newcastle bosses ‘growing increasingly hopeful’ of sealing massive transfer coup ahead of Prem rivals
Newcastle are reportedly ‘growing increasingly hopeful’ that they can beat a number of Premier League rivals to the signing of Christian Eriksen this summer.
Eriksen signed a short-term deal with Brentford until the end of the season in January after he had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted in the wake of his cardiac arrest with Denmark during Euro 2020.
The playmaker has so far claimed a goal and an assist in five Premier League outings for the Bees. He also made a goalscoring return for his country and looks like he has never been away.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank has already spoken about his desire to keep his fellow countryman. However, the likes of Tottenham, Everton and West Ham are all showing interest in the 30-year-old.
Newcastle can also be added to that list though, with the Northern Echo claiming that the cash-rich Magpies are ‘growing increasingly hopeful’ of winning the race for Eriksen‘s signature.
Eddie Howe’s men are on the brink of securing their Premier League status. To that end, the Newcastle boss is already plotting his needs for the summer transfer window.
The club’s Saudi Arabia-based backers are expected to fund another strong window for Newcastle. Similar to the one they did in January, and Eriksen is firmly on their radar.
However, the report adds that the St James’ Park hierarchy are mindful of Financial Fair Play regulations. With that in mind, adding a free transfer of Eriksen’s quality is a no-brainer.
Newcastle in prime position to land Eriksen
Newcastle are expected to offer the attacking midfielder a significant increase on his current wages at Brentford. They will also be able to match or better any other offer Eriksen receives.
Eriksen excelled during his seven-year stay at Tottenham, scoring 69 goals in 305 appearances for the club. He was also dubbed the ‘assist king’ during that time and would give Newcastle’s midfield another dimension.
The report adds that Newcastle director Amanda Staveley will ‘attempt to sell a vision of a club with achievable ambitions of challenging for a place in the top six in the next couple of seasons’.
That vision appeared to work in January, when the Magpies snapped up highly-rated midfielder Bruno Guimaraes ahead of a number of rivals.
Newcastle are back in action this weekend when they host Leicester City in the Premier League.
Howe’s men are currently 10 points clear of the relegation places, although 18th-placed Burnley do have a game in hand.
