Newcastle sense late opportunity to snatch Prem star with bid ‘too good to turn down’
Conor Coady could be the subject of a last-minute transfer offer from Newcastle United, according to a report on the Wolves captain.
Coady has been a standout player for Wolves since joining them in 2015 from Huddersfield Town. The former Liverpool youngster was instrumental in Wolves’ rise to the Premier League; he has remained consistent as they have consolidated since.
A full England international since 2020, the defender has sometimes been linked with a move to a more traditionally powerful club.
It emerged back in October that Newcastle had put Coady on their transfer wishlist following their Saudi-backed takeover.
Defence is a key area that the Magpies are still seeking to strengthen as the January deadline approaches. They are yet to sign a centre-back this month.
Diego Carlos of Sevilla was their top target, but the La Liga side held firm. Ever since, Newcastle have been scouring the market for other opportunities.
Now, the Daily Star have revived the links between Newcastle and Conor Coady. They claim that Eddie Howe’s side could even offer more than £25m to snatch his services.
Wolves have the 28-year-old under contract until 2025, so are “under no pressure” to sell.
But Newcastle could test their resolve, since Howe approves of the Premier League experience Coady has built up. The Star say Wolves may have to accept if an offer arrives that is “too good to turn down”.
Newcastle have Conor Coady alternatives
Newcastle have already bolstered their backline by tempting La Liga winner Kieran Trippier back to the Premier League from Atletico Madrid.
They now need to strengthen in the centre of defence, hence their interest in Coady. But he is not the only one.
The report reminds that West Ham stopper Issa Diop is also of interest. However, given the Hammers’ shortage at the back, he is only likely to be available if they sign a replacement first.
West Ham are trying to take Duje Caleta-Car from Marseille. So if that materialises, there may be more scope for Newcastle to negotiate with Diop.
Brighton’s Dan Burn is also a target at St James’ Park, but a first bid has reportedly been rejected.
For now, Howe will have to navigate the rest of the season with Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez unless any late deal comes off.
It cannot be doubted that Newcastle have the finances to make another January signing, but it remains to be seen if they have the time.
