Newcastle ‘spied’ on top Tottenham target during international break – report
Newcastle United sent ‘spies’ to watch a top Tottenham target during the international break as they step up their interest him, a report has claimed.
The Magpies are likely going to be forced into signing talent from abroad in the January transfer window. Premier League clubs’ apparent refusal to sell to them puts them in a tricky position.
There is of course plenty of potential in the European market, though. And one of the hottest prospects will likely be up for grabs.
Dusan Vlahovic and his representatives are pushing Fiorentina into selling him. And Newcastle are going to put up a fight to sign him.
Tottenham are prepared to do what it takes to make the 21-year-old their’s, which has prompted the Toon to respond, according to The Sun.
They sent their ‘top spies’ to watch the striker as Serbia dramatically qualified for the 2022 World Cup at Portugal’s expense.
Newcastle are said to have a greater need to sign him in January than Spurs and fellow admirers Man City, so perhaps will push harder.
The report claims they want two full-backs, a centre-back, a midfielder and a striker. But previous suggestions have been that defence is the priority.
And new boss Eddie Howe is said to want proven Premier League experience to help stave off relegation. Of course, that’s something Vlahovic is lacking.
However, that may be deemed to be insignificant due to his goalscoring prowess. He didn’t score against Portugal but had netted in the prior friendly with Qatar.
And on his return to Fiorentina action on Saturday he bagged a brace in a 4-3 win over AC Milan.
That took his tally to the season to 10 goals in 13 Serie A matches. His electric form over the past 18 months means an ‘auction’ will soon begin.

Howe absence hits Newcastle hard
Meanwhile, Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin has heaped praise on Howe following the entertaining 3-3 draw with Brentford.
The Premier League clash at St James’ Park was Howe’s first game in charge. Although he had to watch from a hotel room after testing positive for Covid-19.
It showed the ability of some of his most important players, such as Saint-Maximin, while also highlighting their major defensive problems once more.
Saint-Maximin was quizzed about Howe’s absence and his impact on the team following the match, and claimed they “need him” on the touchline…
