Newcastle United transfer news: Cameron Carter-Vickers a target as doubts surround Celtic switch

Newcastle are keeping tabs on Cameron Carter-Vickers and could swoop to sign the defender if Celtic fail to wrap up a permanent deal this summer.

Tottenham defender Carter-Vickers has spent the season on loan at Celtic. And on Wednesday night he was celebrating as the Glasgow giants won the Premiership title. That success is partly down to Carter-Vickers who has been a rock at the back.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou was in the hunt for a new central defender after he took charge. He needed a replacement for Kristoffer Ajer and turned to Tottenham for Carter-Vickers. It turned out to be a masterstroke.

The 24-year-old was part of a Celtic defence that conceded just 22 goals in 37 games in the league. It was crucial to them winning the league and his performances have not gone unnoticed.

Celtic do have the option to sign Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis. It was thought a fee of £6million was agreed at the time. However now they have won the title, the fee could rise. Performance related add-ons could push it closer to the £10million mark.

It remains to be seen if Celtic would be willing to go that high. And while they ponder their next move a host of Premier League clubs are waiting in the wings.

Southampton and newly promoted Fulham are two of them, but Newcastle can be added to the list. Indeed SBI Soccer report that Newcastle are keeping a very close eye on the situation.

One thing is certain Magpies boss Eddie Howe wants a new central defender. Therefore it is no surprise that Carter-Vickers is being linked.

Despite being cashed-up Newcastle will not go crazy in the transfer market. They are keen to fit in with Financial Fair Play so £10million would fit with the plan.

Sven Botman also remains a target for Howe but he would cost significantly more. French club Lille would be looking for a fee in the region of £34million.

Newcastle spy a bargain

It is easy to see why Newcastle are weighing up a swoop for Carter-Vickers at that price. He is a strong, imposing figure at the back and very good in the air. Carter-Vickers has big potential that was never realised at Tottenham. But at 24 he does have time on his side.

He also showed at Celtic what can happen with a solid run of games. He made 43 appearances for them and played his best football. His hard work ethic and commitment will make him a favourite with fans and teammates alike.

Celtic remain in the box seat to do a deal but it will be no surprise if he does end up at Newcastle.
