No Fernandes blame, as Man Utd told duo must go to fund star signing

Rio Ferdinand says that at least one Manchester United star must go if the club are to have a realistic chance of securing Jack Grealish’s transfer.

United football director John Murtough reportedly began his summer transfer work after the Europe League final defeat in Gdansk. In those early meetings, he reportedly informed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer of room at the club for one ‘mega-signing’. Right now, Jadon Sancho looks to be that man.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils have enjoyed speculation over making additions in other areas of the pitch.

Aston Villa captain and Sancho’s fellow England star Grealish has had links with a move to Old Trafford.

But the conundrum over where he would fit in under Solskjaer has proved the stumbling block in the transfer narrative.

Many have said Grealish would clash with talisman Bruno Fernandes. Ferdinand, though, believes that either Paul Pogba or Marcus Rashford – perhaps both – would have to go if United were to bring in Grealish.

Asked whether his former side should be looking into the attacker’s transfer, Ferdinand told UMM‘s YouTube channel: “All day long. All day long, man.

“I don’t think Bruno Fernandes is the problem, you’ve got Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba that are both playing on the left and that’s where Jack plays.

“His best position is on the left, and his next best position is No.10. They’re the positions where our most influential players are right now. So I think it’s difficult to see him at Manchester United right now.

“If he leaves Villa, I just don’t think it’ll be to Manchester United, unless they ship one or two of those boys away. I see it as a difficult deal to be done for Man United.”

Grealish has proved a revelation since captaining his boyhood club to a Premier League return.

He impressed in 2019/20, but his form last season saw him enter Gareth Southgate’s England fold. The 25-year-old did not play in the opening Euro 2020 clash with Croatia, but starred in both warm-up games.

Man Utd exit reportedly possible

As well as Pogba, Fernandes and Rashford, Donny van de Beek provides another attacking outlet for United.

However, he has struggled to settle in his debut season at Old Trafford.

Several pundits have claimed that the attacking midfielder should consider his future and reports now claim that he could move to a Euro giant.
