Norwich head queue for Chelsea man struggling for minutes

Norwich are at the head of the queue to sign Billy Gilmour after the Chelsea man starred for Scotland against England on Friday.

The 20-year-old impressed for Scotland against the Three Lions at Wembley, but since tested positive for Covid-19. That left the midfielder self-isolating as Scotland were beaten 3-1 by Croatia to exit Euro 2020 at the group stage.

Gilmour burst on to the scene with Chelsea in 2019/20. He was thrown into a cup game by Frank Lampard against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge and showed his class.

He soon picked up an injury though which halted his progress and he made only eight starts under Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel is said to be keen to get Gilmour game time and a loan looks like the option.

The Sun report that as many as five other Premier League clubs are chasing him, but Norwich are leading the chase.

Canaries boss Daniel Farke worked with Tuchel at Borussia Dortmund and the Blues boss is willing to trust him with Gilmour’s development.

Norwich’s promotion push last seas0n was helped by Tottenham’s Oliver Skipp. The England Under-21 man spent the season at Carrow Road and Farke is looking for another similar deal.

Farke is still understood to be keen to get Skipp back for another season, but without a boss at Spurs the German boss will have to be patient.

Gilmour was keen for a loan move in January, but Tuchel refused to sanction a deal.

Sitting behind N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in Tuchel’s pecking order, Gilmour has struggled for minutes.

Gilmour loan blocked

Asked if denying Gilmour a loan in January was an error, Tuchel said in March: “It’s absolutely no mistake. It was unfortunately not his choice, it was my choice.

“The choice was made for Chelsea and not for the personal goals of Billy. He accepted it in a five-minute talk, he had no problem with it.

“I actually hope he knows how much I appreciate him as a person and as a footballer.

“He has three big problems. N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho are three big problems.

“They are never injured and they perform on a level in central midfield that is not easy to compete with. This is the only thing.

“I have no trust issue with him and I have no problem with attitude.”
