Paul Scholes brutally points out serious flaws in Ralf Rangnick appointment
Paul Scholes has attacked Manchester United’s interim appointment of Ralf Rangnick after their demoralising 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.
The 63-year-old German coach was the man the United board turned to after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November. But while the former Schalke and RB Leipzig coach has steadied the ship at Old Trafford, Sunday’s defeat at their neighbours once again highlighted how far they are behind the champions.
After a competitive first half, United fell apart in the second period. A brace apiece for Kevin de Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez condemned United to defeat at The Etihad.
Rangnick is due to start a two-year consultancy role at United on July 1 and maintained the manner of United’s defeat did not change his outlook on the squad.
“I knew that before I came,” said Rangnick. “I wouldn’t have needed that game to be aware of that. For now, it is about developing the team, finishing the season as well as we possibly can and all the other things are issues that need to be spoken about and hopefully developed at the end of the season in the next transfer window.”
Scholes though does not believe that Rangnick should have been appointed into the interim role.
“What do we expect? We’ve brought in an interim coach who hasn’t coached at an elite team,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.
“He hasn’t coached a big team, he hasn’t coached at a big football club like United where there’s so much expected of Manchester United. Whoever you’re playing against, it doesn’t matter.

‘They’re lucky it’s not five or six’
“He’s never been at a top club. He’s coached a club for two years out of the last 10 years.
“How have United behind the scenes come to the conclusion that this man is going to be the right man for seven months? It baffles me.
“The players are lost on the football pitch. The first 20 minutes I was actually surprised they played really well, they were comfortable on the ball, Pogba up front looked alright.
“His subs have worked the last few weeks don’t get me wrong but it was a deflated team.
“As much as you can have a go at Man United today, they’re playing against possibly one of the best teams we’ve seen.”
Former United midfielder Scholes says United were lucky not to ship in more than four after a second half in which they were under siege.
“They’re lucky it’s not five or six. Again the goalkeeper, five or six saves,” added Scholes.
“You spoke before the game saying defensively since Ole’s gone he’s sured things up – he hadn’t. Never in a million years. He’s kidding himself if he thinks that.
“The keeper has stopped him from getting batterings for a long time. Today was exactly the same.”
