Paul Scholes slams Man Utd players for ‘glaringly obvious’ flaw he finds ‘crazy’; denies Rangnick is ‘proper coach’

Paul Scholes picked apart one “glaringly obvious” problem Manchester United have after their draw against Southampton.

Man Utd were held to a 1-1 stalemate by Southampton in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off. Despite Jadon Sancho’s opener, Saints took a point back to the South Coast after Che Adams’ equaliser.

United have now drawn three games in a row by the same scoreline – and they lost the first of those via a penalty shootout after.

It has been a tricky time for Ralf Rangnick’s side and their problems are not going away. Ex-United midfielder Scholes is all too aware and pinpointed how the players are not working hard enough for the badge.

What’s more, he could not observe any connections between the team anywhere on the pitch, unlike Southampton.

“These Manchester United players do not want to go the ugly side of the game,” Scholes told BT Sport (via the MEN).

“You watch the game and it is glaringly obvious that the players do not want to put a shift in for this club, which is crazy really.

“You see this Southampton team and they play the positions brilliantly. I thought the two centre-forwards were a real handful and played together.

“We spoke about partnerships before the game and Southampton had them all over the pitch. United didn’t have one.”

Scholes said he felt “sorry” for interim manager Ralf Rangnick due to his players either not listening, not being able to follow his instructions or not even wanting to.

But he did also turn the focus towards Rangnick himself. Indeed, Scholes insisted Man Utd should have a proper manager in place.

He quipped: “One team has got a proper coach, the other team have got a sporting director, which can’t be right for Manchester United.”

Scholes not only pundit to question Rangnick and Man Utd

After replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier in the season, now the heat has been turning on interim boss Rangnick too.

Scholes is not the only one to have questioned his role at the club. Indeed, Paul Merson thinks the plan to move him into a consultancy role could also come crashing down if results continue the way they are.

Asked if Rangnick would be in charge next season, he told Sky Sports: “100 per cent not, definitely not. I don’t think so. I’ve got a better chance of being in charge, that’s how far the step is.

“I read something that they have improved, but I do not see that.

“I don’t see him being there and the way it is going at the moment if they don’t get in the top four I would be shocked if he went upstairs.

“It’s the deal, I know that’s the deal, but it’s not a good thing and I think it needs to be nipped in the bud at Man Utd. I can’t believe what they are doing.

“Waiting for next season to bring a new manager in? There’s a lot of work to be done at Man Utd. This is not just bring a new manager in and let’s go next season.

“They are a million miles off and things have to change very quickly. I would have had someone in as soon as possible. You pay £70m/£80m for football players and some of them don’t play.

“Why wouldn’t you break the bank for managers if you need to get a manager out of a club? In my opinion they are a must. Great teams have great managers.”
