Problems stall Newcastle manager target as details emerge of surprising deal

A trusted source has suggested Newcastle have delayed announcing Eddie Howe as their new manager due to issues over his backroom staff while also revealing the length of his proposed deal.

Howe seems to be the man that the Magpies want to succeed Steve Bruce. Villarreal chief Unai Emery was the early frontrunner but rejected the offer to move to St James’ Park. Paulo Fonseca appeared to be on the radar but attention has now turned to Howe.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth in the summer of 2020. He received a ringing endorsement from Newcastle’s interim manager Graeme Jones on Friday.

But the Gateshead-born tactician stopped short of admitting that Howe had signed on the dotted line. And now journalist Fabrizio Romano has had his say on the issue.

Many media outlets are reporting that Howe is close to penning a contract on Tyneside. But the Italian has tweeted that “there’s still something to be fixed to reach an agreement with his technical staff members”.

He added that the new owners had been “on it” since Friday morning, trying to resolve the problem.

Howe is said to have held lengthy talks with the Newcastle hierarchy this week, outlining his vision for the club. They are thought to have been impressed with his detailed presentation and want him in the dugout.

The make-up of his backroom staff is extremely important, with the players needing a lift after a woeful start. And it is something that the powers-that-be will continue to work on until they get their man.

Newcastle to put trust in Howe

Howe is likely to be unveiled over the weekend but may not be in the stands to watch Newcastle face Brighton. He will be tasked with moving the team away from the relegation zone and into relative safety.

The January transfer window will allow the former Burnley boss to strengthen, with funds available from the Saudi-backed owners. A few sceptics have suggested that Howe may be a stop-gap manager.

He would be employed to keep the club in the top flight before giving way to a heavyweight. But Romano has also put that rumour to bed, stating that his contract will be until the summer of 2024.

Any manager at the club faces a make or-break period after the upcoming international break. Three of Newcastle’s next four games are at home to Brentford, Norwich and Burnley.
