Pundit alludes to England call-up for West Ham star following ‘fantastic’ performance against Lyon
Clinton Morrison has hailed West Ham star Jarrod Bowen for his goalscoring performance against Lyon, alluding to an England call-up for the forward.
Bowen has been one of West Ham’s standout performers all season. The 25-year-old is the Hammers’ top scorer this season, with 14 goals in all competitions.
Indeed, he has contributed to the most goals in the team, too. He is ahead of Michail Antonio on that metric, with 23 goal contributions to Antonio’s 20.
David Moyes’ side missed Bowen when he spent four games on the sideline through injury. They lost two games in that stretch, and scored just three goals.
However, the winger has hit the ground running upon his return. Bowen has scored in both games since his injury, in which West Ham beat Everton 2-1 and drew 1-1 against Lyon, in the Europa League quarter-final.
Former Premier League striker Morrison hailed Bowen for his goalscoring performance against Lyon.
“Lyon give it away and [Pablo] Fornals does well,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“But [Jerome] Boateng, I don’t know what he’s doing trying to dribble across his box. He’s not quick enough, and Jarrod Bowen does what Jarrod Bowen has been doing all season. He dinks it over the goalie – a fantastic finish.”
Indeed, Bowen has made a habit of scoring big goals this season.
Continuing in that vein will be important for the Hammers, both in Europe and in the Premier League.
Injury halted England opportunity for Bowen
Morrison also feels that should Bowen not have sustained an injury, he could have made the recent England squad.
“If not for his injury last month, I think Jarrod Bowen would have been in and around the last England squad for the goals that he’s scored this season,” he said.
“I think the two friendlies would have been the perfect opportunity to see if he was ready to go into that environment. He missed out but all he can do is keep doing what he’s doing at West Ham, because Gareth Southgate does give players opportunities.”
While Bowen missed the last international break, continuing to perform will stand him in good stead for England selection in the future.
