Pundit questions treatment of Tottenham star who ‘needs’ to leave

Dele Alli has been sent a reminder that he needs to leave Tottenham this summer after not getting the opportunities he deserves.

Alli only completed 90 minutes in one of his 29 appearances for Tottenham in the 2020-21 season. He found himself out of favour under Jose Mourinho and his chances didn’t improve much under caretaker boss Ryan Mason. His future came into question in January and now will again.

Daniel Levy blocked his exit in the winter transfer window, but the situation may have changed now.

At the age of 25, Alli needs to get his career back on track and it seems likely that would have to be away from Tottenham.

That’s the opinion of former player Paul Robinson, who wants to see the midfielder challenge himself elsewhere.

“Dele needs a fresh start,” Robinson told Football Insider. “I think he needs a new challenge.

“He is still so young and people forget his age. He has been at Spurs a long time now and without a doubt it will have been the toughest year of his career.

“I think he needs new voices and new surroundings. A fresh start will bring out the best in him I think.

“We saw flashes of brilliance from him this season. I think he is a phenomenal talent, I really do.

“Every time he was given an opportunity this year he looked sharp. When he played in the cup sometimes he was the best player on the pitch. I cannot understand why Dele wasn’t used more to be honest.

“There may be an opportunity now with Spurs rebuilding for him to move on. He was an England regular a couple of years ago. Now he is not even close to the squad.

“The time has come for him to re-ignite his career. He is at the perfect age now to move.

“A move will help him realise his world-class potential. I know he can achieve it.”

Alli admits to worst season

As he prepares for a summer that could be a turning point in his career, Alli recently admitted that he has faced tough challenges over the past 12 months.

He posted on Instagram: “It goes without saying this season has been the most difficult in my career so far.

“There have been some incredibly low moments and tough challenges I’ve had to face. But I’m grateful to always have the opportunity to do what I love.

“This season has taught me I can’t take anything for granted. And I’m more determined than ever to come back fitter and stronger.

“Thanks to the fans for the great support as always and look forward to seeing you all back in the stadiums next season.”
