Pundit says Liverpool fringe player will be ‘thinking time is right to move one’

Joe Gomez will be looking to leave Liverpool this summer after “falling well down the pecking order”, according to Alan Hutton.

Gomez has made 15 appearances this season, but he has made just one start in the Premier League. He did start twice in the FA Cup earlier this month against Norwich and Nottingham Forest. And the second of those appearances was at right back in the 1-0 win at the City Ground.

Gomez had the task of keeping Wales star Brennan Johnson quiet and he did a decent job against the talented youngster. But with with a number of options in defence Jurgen Klopp is likely to relegate Gomez to the sidelines again after the international break.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has nailed down the right-back spot, while Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are all ahead of Gomez in the pecking order.

Injuries have hampered Gomez badly and the former Charlton man has slipped out of the England reckoning.

And former Scotland defender Hutton thinks the 24-year-old will want to play “as much as possible at this point in his career”.

Liverpool are expected to field a number of offers for the player this summer, according to The Athletic. While, 90min have claimed Gomez has now reached a painful decision and will now push to depart Anfield this summer.

Gomez could command £30m fee

Gomez’s current contract runs until the summer of 2024. So a fee of £30m has been mooted for the player.

And Hutton believes Gomez will be looking to move on at the end of the season.

“It’s difficult one for Gomez coming in,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“He’s a centre-half, it’s always going to be tricky to replicate what Trent Alexander-Arnold does for that Liverpool team.

“He’s still only 24, and of course, he will be wanting to play as much as possible at this point in his career.

“He has fallen well down the pecking order at Liverpool, especially after that serious injury he had.

“He may well be thinking that the time is right to move on and play at a high level. It could be time to assess his situation.”
