Rafa Benitez told struggling Tottenham star would flourish at Everton
Lee Hendrie has urged Everton to pursue Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn, feeling he would flourish there, as well as at Newcastle United.
Given recent reports that Bergwijn is unhappy at Spurs, speculation over a move is natural. Indeed, Bergwijn has not played all too often for Tottenham since he joined in 2020.
The winger has played just eight times in the Premier League this season. What’s more, five of those appearances have been from the bench.
However, Bergwijn impressed in Spurs’ recent EFL Cup win against West Ham. The Dutchman had a hand in both Tottenham goals in the 2-1 win, scoring and then assisting Lucas Moura.
The glimpses of class he has shown, despite his fringe role, have led to Hendrie feeling the winger could be better utilised elsewhere.
Speaking on Sky Sports News (quoted by HITC) Hendrie claimed Bergwijn would flourish at either Everton, or Newcastle.
“100%, 100%. I am not doubting his ability at all, probably playing week in and week out would give him that stability, that confidence that we do see the best out of Bergwijn,” he said.
Indeed, consistent game time could obviously help Bergwijn get back to his best. However, Antonio Conte recently claimed Bergwijn is ‘totally involved’ at Tottenham.
What’s more, Bergwijn is under contract until 2025. As such, he would command a decent fee, one which Everton would struggle to afford.
As such, a move to Newcastle would be more likely, if he was to move on at all.
Bergwijn also wanted by Ajax
Bergwijn could indeed find form, should he move to another club for more game time. As such, a move to Ajax could materialise.
Indeed, the Eredivisie club are said to be ‘really serious’ about a deal for the Dutchman.
Ajax are second in the league at present. Signing Bergwijn could help Ajax to overcome his previous employers, PSV Eindhoven.
However, Bergwijn reportedly being totally involved at Spurs could cause an issue for Ajax, as with other sides. However, if their interest is as serious as reported, we should still expect them to make an approach.
