Rangnick in bother as baffled Man Utd players rally against continued role for under-fire star – report
Some in the Manchester United dressing room are beginning to seriously question Harry Maguire and his place in the team, a report has claimed.
The Red Devils paid £80million to sign the England international from Leicester in the summer of 2019. And he subsequently became the permanent captain in January 2020 when Ashley Young left for Inter.
Maguire enjoyed a solid season for Man Utd last term, capping it in style at Euro 2020. Indeed, he recovered from an ankle injury to star as the Three Lions reached the final.
However, his form has dipped this season and he has faced continued criticism. In fact, Michael Owen was particularly forthright with his opinion on Maguire after Man Utd’s 1-1 draw with Southampton last month.
Furthermore, newspaper reports have talked of a power struggle between Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo. Maguire has rejected talk that the pair have clashed, but the reports about the defender have not gone away.
Indeed, The Times now claims that some Man Utd players are questioning Maguire’s continued role in the team.
Parts of the dressing room have ‘aired their grievances’ over the 28-year-old at United’s Carrington training complex.
They supposedly feel that some of Maguire’s performances have not met the standards Man Utd expect.
Maguire recently came back from a rib injury and interim manager Ralf Rangnick heaped praise on the player.
Rangnick said: “I think when he came back after his injury he did extremely well. He had a very good performance, a very good game against West Ham.
“In the past two games, yeah he had some weaker moments, against Southampton and when we conceded the goal at Burnley. But he’s our captain and I don’t see any reason to change that.”
Meanwhile, one former Man Utd defender has claimed that the Red Devils should “think about it” if they receive bids for Maguire in the summer close to what they paid for him.
Maguire not only Man Utd star in question
Maguire also faced criticism after a 4-2 defeat away at Leicester in October.
But in a season where Man Utd have underwhelmed, he is not the only player to be under the spotlight.
Midfielder Bruno Fernandes is another player who has dropped off from the level he set last season.
While the Portuguese is close to matching the 17 assists he notched last term, his nine-goal tally is nowhere near his 28 in the previous campaign.
And Paul Scholes had his say on Fernandes after last Wednesday’s Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid.
