Rangnick picks apart ‘sloppy’ Man Utd mistakes with culprits named; explains what they didn’t do enough

Ralf Rangnick was not happy with how “sloppy” Manchester United were after also picking out a couple of other issues from their draw with Young Boys.

Man Utd drew their final Champions League group match 1-1 with Young Boys. It was the first time they have played in the competition since Rangnick took interim charge. Nothing was at stake since qualification was already secured. Still, they would have been hoping for a win.

Rangnick made 11 changes from his most recent lineup. Not all those who came in took their chances to impress, but it was a good opportunity for others.

The German was even able to bring on some younger players from the bench, as well as veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton for his club debut.

In the end, Mason Greenwood’s stunning first-half goal was not enough. Young Boys equalised just before the break when Fabian Rieder scored a stunner of his own.

United remain unbeaten under Rangnick but would have preferred a more positive result. Still, it was a useful experience for many members of the squad.

Even so, the 63-year-old wanted to see his players being more clinical both in and out of possession.

“We should have been 2 if not 3-0 up,” he told BT Sport.

“We had two great opportunities from Amad [Diallo] and Juan Mata. We were a bit sloppy in these situations. We had a third one from [Anthony] Elanga in the second half.

“We were not defending high enough, not proactive enough.

“We also could have conceded two or three goals. If the final score was 3-3 or 4-3 to us no one could have complained.”

Ralf Rangnick discusses full-back fortunes

Rangnick also addressed the fortunes of both his full-backs. Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka started the game, just days after one pundit theorised they may struggle to be as prominent under the new boss.

But Rangnick was happy to have Shaw involved again and hopes to call on him again soon.

“It was great to see Luke Shaw back,” he said.

“Hopefully he can be a candidate for the Norwich game in the squad.”

The chances of Wan-Bissaka featuring then, though, are less clear. He clattered into the advertising boards just as the game was finishing and required treatment.

Rangnick said United will have to monitor how the right-back is over the next couple of days.

“He got two knocks, one on the wrist and knee,” Rangnick confirmed.

“We have to see how this develops by Saturday.”
