Report claims Daniel Levy already has ‘elite’ boss lined up if Conte quits Tottenham
Daniel Levy reportedly already has a name in the frame to replace Antonio Conte, if the current Tottenham boss decides he has had enough in north London.
The Italian has only been at the club a few months, but there are already strong rumours that he is considering walking away after a difficult January transfer window and a run of three successive league defeats.
Conte initially guided Spurs to an unbeaten nine-match run in the league but the wheels have come off a little since then.
Reports from Italy also emerged of Conte being unhappy with the club’s January policy.
Tottenham sold Dele Alli and sent Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Bryan Gil out on loan. In terms of incomings than only brought in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kuluevski from Juventus.
Even though a big summer of business is expected, there are growing fears that Conte is concerned his reputation as one of the world’s top managers is being damaged by this stint in north London.
To that end, he could decide to walk away to protect the respectability he has left.
But if that was to happen, the Daily Telegraph reports that Levy will be straight on the phone to Mauricio Pochettino.
The report adds that the club’s former boss was approached when Jose Mourinho was shown the door. However, at the time Pochettino decided he didn’t want to let PSG down so early into his tenure there.
Levy is still a big fan of the Argentine, despite what happened at the end of his time at Tottenham.
Who is the best: Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland?
Pochettino has unfinished business at Tottenham
There has always been a strong feeling that Pochettino should have been awarded the chance to build another strong Spurs team, with the one he left going stale after reaching the Champions League final.
But one massive spanner in the works is Manchester United’s interest in the 49-year-old.
The Red Devils will appoint a new permanent boss this summer when Ralf Rangnick takes up a new role. And Pochettino, along with Ajax chief Erik Ten Hag, are the overwhelming favourites for the job.
However, Tottenham remain hopeful that Conte will battle on until the end of the season. Fresh in the knowledge that he will be able to move for his top targets in the summer.
Indeed, their hopes of Harry Kane also extending his stay depend very much on both those factors.
The England skipper wanted out last summer but Conte’s arrival has since convinced him to stay. The Italian leaving could end up having a disastrous double impact on the club.
