Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has agreed with football director John Murtough on a transfer plan involving Jadon Sancho, a report claims.
The Red Devils head into the summer transfer window off the back of agonising Europa League disappointment. After storming their way to the final, the defeat on penalties to Villarreal put a dampener on what was otherwise a season of progress. Indeed, Solskjaer has reportedly shown enough positive signs to earn a new contract.
However, the pressure will be on from next season to go one step further and clinch silverware.
To do that though, United are looking to make changes to their squad up front. Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho remains a firm transfer target, after last summer’s failed swoop.
One German journalist has claimed that United have ‘mostly agreed’ personal terms with the England international.
The Mail on Sunday, meanwhile, adds that Sancho is the club’s top target for a ‘mega-signing’ this summer.
United only have the capacity to make one such acquisition due to the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
As such, Sancho’s transfer – which could cost similar to Paul Pogba’s £89million move from Juventus – has taken priority.
The winger’s Dortmund team-mate Erling Haaland is also on their radar. However, the Norwegian striker has hinted that he will be loyal to his contract this summer.
Next summer, though, a £65million release clause in his deal activates, meaning he will be available for less than his market value.
United subsequently plan to wait 12 months and beat the rush for the 20-year-old’s signature.
Edinson Cavani’s 12-month extension has made a new striker less of a priority at United, but the right side of attack remains a problem.
Solskjaer’s transfer meeting with Murtough
The Mail on Sunday adds that Solskjaer and Murtough met on Thursday after the former arrived back from Gdansk.
Indeed, he did not hang around formulating his transfer plan to lead the club to silverware.
Solskjaer has reportedly told his superiors of his confidence in a strike force of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, Cavani and Sancho making his side competitive.
United are also reportedly closing in on signing goalkeeper Tom Heaton after his Aston Villa departure.
However, he has plans to forge a bigger role at the club than expected.
